Here's the correct order (and why you're overthinking it).
You've got the products. What you don't have is a clear answer on what goes on first, and the internet has somehow turned "washing your face" into a ten-step exam you're convinced you're failing. So here's the actual order, top to bottom, no waffle.
The correct order, morning and night
The rule underneath all of it is simple: thinnest to thickest. Watery stuff sinks in first, heavier stuff seals it in. That's the whole logic.
Morning:
-
Cleanser
-
Toner or essence (optional, skip it if you don't use one)
-
Serum (a vitamin C or hydrating serum, if you use one)
-
Moisturiser
-
SPF, always last
Night:
-
Cleanser
-
Any targeted treatment you use (if you use one)
-
Moisturiser
That's it. SPF is the last step in the morning and doesn't appear at night. Everything else is just thin-then-thick.
Do serum and SPF really have a "right" place?
Yes, and they're the two people get wrong most.
Serum goes before moisturiser. It's lighter, so it needs to reach your skin before you lay a heavier cream on top. Put moisturiser first and you're basically asking your serum to soak through a duvet.
SPF goes last in the morning, over everything else. It's designed to sit on top and form the protective layer, so nothing should go on after it. If you take one thing from this: serum before cream, sunscreen last.
The bit nobody tells you: the order matters less than you think
Here's the part the ten-step guides leave out. Getting the order slightly wrong is not going to ruin your skin.
If your moisturiser and your serum swap places one morning, you will be completely fine. The order helps products work at their best, it's optimisation, not a safety rule. The genuine non-negotiables are short: cleanse before you layer, and wear SPF in the day. The rest is fine-tuning, and fine-tuning is not worth losing sleep over.
Somewhere along the way, a simple routine got sold to you as a test with a pass mark. It isn't one. Most people your age need a handful of products, used in a roughly sensible order, done consistently. That beats a perfect twelve-step sequence you resent every night and abandon by Thursday.
Quick answers
Does serum go before or after moisturiser? Before. Serums are lighter and need to reach the skin first. Moisturiser goes on top to seal it in.
Does SPF go before or after moisturiser? After. Sunscreen is the final step of your morning routine and sits over everything else. Nothing goes on top of it.
Does the order of skincare actually matter? A bit, not a lot. The order helps each product perform at its best, but getting it slightly wrong won't damage your skin. Cleansing first and wearing SPF in the day are the only parts worth being strict about.
What if I only use a few products? Then your routine is easy: cleanser, moisturiser, and SPF in the morning is a complete routine. You don't need more steps to be doing it "properly."
The ROCCO take
The order is worth knowing. It is not worth the anxiety it seems to cause a whole generation of people who are, genuinely, just trying to look after their skin.
Learn the thin-to-thick logic once, keep SPF last, and then stop treating your bathroom shelf like a spelling test. It is why we keep routines short: fewer steps, less to overthink, more chance you actually enjoy the two minutes instead of stressing through them.
Skincare that feels. That's the whole idea.
